Friday, May 13th, all of the 6th grade classes from all Papillion schools got together and had the district track meet. It just so happened to be one of the most miserably cold and windy days in May, but we braved the weather to see Payton do her best. She was so excited because she had made the relay team for her school and had been practicing hand-offs for days.
When we arrived the pacer portion of the day was going, there was a quiet stir in the stands, and a lot of shivering.
I had to get a shot of the turf field Papillion South plays on, it was quite nice.
Payton ran both the 50 and 100. She did much better at the 100, guess the nerves were a little more calm after that first 50 qualifier. However, she continued to look at her opponents even after we tried to get her not to. She looks like quite the little runner in this shot.
Here is where Gregg told her to go get her sweats on, apparently she had gave them to someone else to wear even though she was freezing.
Payton also did the long jump and the softball throw. The kids didn't get any coaching on proper long jump form, and very little actual practice. However, I think she did pretty good considering.
The judges weren't disqualifying scratches, so in some cases they were adding an additional foot plus to jumps. I was none too thrilled with their judging. Payton never scratched, however, had she scratched, she would have placed.
9 foot something. Not too shabby.
After the long jump she came up in the stands for a little warmth and hot coco that Gregg had made me, it was delicious.
And of course some coaching...
At one point someone was announcing names and the sun made itself shown for a split second and the announcer yelled, "THE SUN." I thought that was pretty funny.
Soon it was time for the relay races. Here are the two Patriot relay teams with the PE coach in between. The girl on the right sitting is SO FAST, I believe she won everything she participated in. I was so impressed seeing paytons team stretching calmly.
Then both of the Patriot relay teams got together for a bit before the races started.
The seriousness didn't last long, there was chest bumps, and some rolling around on the turf. They ARE sixth graders.
The first team to go from Patriot won their heat, and eventually placed 3rd over all, out of seven schools.

Ciara was the last leg, she kicked butt. And the girls won! Not only did they win their heat, but the whole thing over all.
Patriot kids were going CRAZY!
Patriot won more than half of the awards out of the seven schools.

This was Payton's first team sport experience & I don't believe it will be her last. I wouldn't doubt that track and field will be something she continues into Junior High next year and High School later.
