Pastries, Fireworks, Scaredy-Cat, and a Suicidal Bird
Independence day in the Omaha area is always a treat. This fourth holiday was no different. Most of the area shows were on Saturday (the 2nd), so they coincided with our weekend outing. We had German food for dinner and then hit up a Mexican bakery before heading home.
Checking out at the International Bakery in Omaha's little Mexico.
This was part of the selection of pastries at the bakery. We left with two grocery bags of pastries for less than $9. It was kind of fun not knowing what each of the items were before we tried them.
Gregg had to go back through the line for some donuts because we read reviews that they were quite tasty and no doubt they were. Very different than the usual donut, there was a distinct hint of citrus.
Then we went home and Payton got to fire off the fireworks she purchased.
Sparklers
She was chaperoned by Gregg having his favorite brew.
Smoke bombs
and some other bombs
The sun was setting fast so we made our way up the street to the elementary school to watch the neighborhood fireworks show. There was a big party with a live band and loads of food, but we were trying to keep low key.
So we parked the truck and got primed for the fireworks to start.
Payton got impatient and started with the sparklers and black cats again...
It was a gorgeous view we had of the neighborhood.
There is a video below of the neighborhood fireworks that evening. But the best show was from our deck last night. There was literally no less than 25 separate shows going on that we could see clearly from our deck. From the front yard there was another 10 or so. I don't believe we will ever see fireworks shows like this again. It's quite amazing.
Jolie has been none too thrilled with the constant sounds of fireworks. Last night she was literally shaking and I tried to calm her while we waited for the shows to stop.
Today a bird committed suicide by trying to fly into the house, but going head long into the window. Jolie must have jumped 2 feet off her perch at the back window and went to hide. It was as loud as the fireworks last night.
She did come out later to see what I was doing with the shovel. I had to go bury the poor bird. Unfortunately the birds here often try to fly into the house via the windows and usually they recover. The bird today wasn't so lucky. I did make sure it was dead before burying it though. Poor thing.
Here's the video from the neighborhood show. It was quite something. I tried to get some video from our back deck last night, but it just didn't come out very good. The audio was something though, sounded like a war zone for a good 4 hours.
